A motivated community of fellow word-smiths, gently holding each other accountable to our writing goals and commitments.
A cadence of weekly group calls, creating a regular container for actually doing the work of writing (rather than just thinking about it).
By supporting and championing each other's progress, we'll all benefit from exposure to each other's readers!
Growing up, I always loved reading — and being somewhat naturally good with words enabled me to somehow wangle my way into Oxford to study Literature.
During my time there, I learned a lot about what makes good writing. However, I also absorbed many of the less useful perspectives which our education system instills in us.
Not least, the culture of constantly comparing one's performance with other students, and of paralysing deference to the 'great writers' of history. Such attitudes quickly kill genuine creativity.
In the work I'm doing today, I'm attempting to cultivate a more liberating attitude towards writing — one which is grounded in playfulness, experimentation, discovery, and most importantly, community.
I'm also consciously stepping into the self-confidence that writing can form a viable part of my livelihood.
And I'm trusting that good things will emerge through committing to a consistent practice, even if whatever I write to begin with isn't perfect.
I've managed to make a small start with a newsletter on LinkedIn which is now read by 500 wonderful subscribers, and is already beginning to bear fruit in terms of interesting connections and opportunities.
I've yet to find a writing rhythm I would really like, though.
I've realised that this has a lot to do with feeling like I'm on my own as a writer, and that no one is really holding me to account for the deadlines I set for myself.
Having recently spoken with a number of others who are in a similar place, I've had the bright the idea to try hosting a writing group!
So! If you've been wanting to develop a writing practice that will support your professional work, and feel like participating in a lightly-held, experimental cohort of developing writers, then do register your interest.
It will be low-cost, and also (hopefully) both fun and useful. More info to come soon!
